Axyz Ensemble
The Axyz Ensemble is a group of 14 musicians who compose and perform contemporary music with non-Western influences. Axyz is an international group of young musicians, initiated by the Karnatic Lab in Amsterdam.

The Axyz Ensemble is an amalgamation of the respective spirits of the Karnatic Lab and Contemporary Music through Non-Western Techniques (CMTNWT), a course conducted at the Conservatory of Amsterdam. This course offers a theoretical basis for exploring innovative ways of creating music, while the Karnatic Lab concert series in the Amsterdam Badcuyp forms a stage for practical experiments based on these theories. The Axyz Ensemble extends these new pathways into a professional practice. Axyz focuses on the following musical elements:
-Rhythmic complexity as it appears in both Western contemporary classical music and non-Western music.
-Microtonality derived both from non-Western tonal systems (Southern Indian, Persian, Turkish, Eastern European etc.), and from Western representatives (such as Harry Partch or the French 'spectral music').
-Alternative forms and structures, mostly derived from non-Western music.
The objective of the Axyz Ensemble is to combine these elements in such a way that a new perspective on contemporary music emerges.
