Deep Fried Angel Fish

After spending several years focused on playing Eastern European party music with De Amsterdam Klezmer Band, Gijs decided to seek out new musical freedom in Deep Fried Angel Fish: fresh melodies with a sharp edge, improvised jazz influenced by klezmer, Latin and Balkan music.

With this in mind he approached accordion virtuoso Theo van Tol (also a member of De Amsterdam Klezmer Band), alto saxophone/bass clarinet player Tobias Klein (also in Man Bites Dog, Bhedam, Dalgoo and other groups) and double bass player Meinrad Kneer (also in Dalgoo and other bands, winner of the Jur Naessens Award 2002). Each one of these musicians is an experienced composer who writes for the band. Deep Fried Angel Fish is poised between structure and freedom, composition and improvisation, ‘World‘ and ‘Western’, worldly and abstract. The unusual combination of instruments results in a great variety of musical colors.
