Hexnut

Hexnut is an ensemble consisting of five soloists who regularly perform within the framework of the Karnatic Lab, the young modern music association responsible for many new developments in Amsterdam's contemporary music scene.   The blueprint for Hexnut consisted of the composition 'Tools', a high-energy virtuoso series of nine short pieces, composed by Ned McGowan in 2003.   This composition, which won McGowan the Dutch Henriette Bosmans Award, makes use of a unique instrumentation, consisting of flute, trumpet, piano and electro-recorder.   The rich textures generated by this combination of instruments in combination with the intense communication between the performers, result in music which is multi-faceted, surprising and which speaks to the listener on many levels.

Hexnut's music is essentially a new type of music, in which the styles and performance practice of contemporary classical musical, jazz, Indian and Balkan music have been amalgamated.   The pieces are mostly composed but include some improvisation and theatrical elements. As a special guest, Hexnut has worked with vocalist Stephie Buttrich, who is known for her expansive and at times extreme singing technique.
