Karnatic Lab
After completion of the course Contemporary Music through Non-Western Techniques at the Conservatory of Amsterdam, Gijs Levelt and Ned McGowan initiated the Karnatic Lab, a concert series dedicated to music that is directly or indirectly influenced by non-Western music.

The objective of The Karnatic Lab is to present music that explores specific elements of Karnatic music (the classical music of Southern India). This concerns the following elements: advanced rhythmical development, microtonality and the application of decorations. Focusing on these concepts can result in the creation of new musical possibilities. A great diversity of musical styles is welcomed at the concerts. Contemporary music, jazz, improvisations, electronics, medieval music and world music have been programmed on the same night of the monthly event.

Besides the concert series in Cultural Centre De Badcuyp in Amsterdam, the Karnatic Lab organises:
-the annual Karnatic Lab Festival, in venues such as the BIMhuis and the IJsbreker in Amsterdam
-tours for the groups Messing met PVC, the Axyz Ensemble, Deep Fried Angel Fish and Bhedam
-the Festival in the Shape of an Egg (in collaboration with TryTone and Mista'Peo)
-CD productions of various groups, including Messing met PVC
-Karnatic Lab Workshops
-The Karnatic Lab On Tour
